Training seats are booked on a first come first serve basis and in most cases, your reservation can only be obtained through the Medical Reserve Corps web portal at mrc.dentoncounty.com. Many of the trainings listed below are only open to current members of the Medical Reserve Corps. Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) Training

Target Audience: MRC members who have not taken the SNS training or those who would like to refresh themselves

Course description: Our MRC is growing! In order to maintain a working knowledge of the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS), we are requiring each member to take the online SNS training. This is a new approach to training that will allow us to continue to bring new training topics to our calendar but ensures that we do not lose some fundamental skills. Please log in to the MRC web portal and look for the “Job Information” tab; click on "Training Materials". From there, you will find the PowerPoint for SNS. Once you have completed the PowerPoint, please RSVP to confirm that you have completed the course. Deadline is September 30, 2012

Point of Dispensing Exercise

Target Audience: All MRC members especially those who have never participated in a POD Exercise.

Time: 8:00 am to 10:30 am

Location: Multiple Locations

Course description: This full scale Point of Dispensing (POD) Exercise is designed to test our SNS capabilities. The event will exercise emergency plans to set up multiple POD sites throughout the county in a mass prophylaxis scenario. Each participant will have an opportunity to simulate his or her role in a POD and understand how the various job assignments work in concert in a Public Health emergency. There will be 6 locations to choose from!

Ham Certification

Target Audience: MRC Members
Time: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm 01/19 and 1pm to 5 pm 01/20

Course description: Interested in becoming a HAM Radio Operator? Anyone can become a licensed amateur radio operator. This Technician class is the entry level course, and a technical background is not required. This course takes place over 2 days: Saturday all day and Sunday afternoon, with the exam given at the end of the class on Sunday. You must attend both sessions and take the exam to become certified. AHA Basic Life Support CPR & AED (for medical professionals)

Target Audience: MRC members with a Medical Assignment

Course description: The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Classroom Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. This course is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

Incident Command Systems (ICS) 300 Course

Target Audience: MRC Command Team or those interested in becoming Command Team members.
Time: 8:00 am - 5:00 pm (January 29 & 30)
          8:00 am - 12 Noon (January 31)
Location: City of Denton Central Fire Station
                322 E. Hickory, Denton, TX 76201 (Parking is at the Center for Visual Arts)
Course description: This course is part of the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and includes organization and staffing, organizing for incidents and events, resource management, and air operation. Pre-requisites for this course are ICS 100, 200. This training is provided by the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM), hosted by the Denton Fire Department, and will include other emergency response professionals.

Incident Command Systems (ICS) 400 Course

Target Audience: MRC Command Team or those interested in becoming Command Team members.
Time: 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm (January 31)
          8:00 am - 5:00 pm (February 1)
Location: City of Denton Central Fire Station
               322 E. Hickory, Denton, TX 76201 (Parking is at the Center for Visual Arts)
Course description: This course expands upon the material covered in ICS 100 through ICS 300. ICS 400 focuses on large single-agency and complex multi-agency/multi-jurisdictional incident response. The course addresses area command and staff issues, as well as the planning, logistical and fiscal considerations associated with complex incident management and interagency coordination. ICS 100, 200, & 300 are pre-requisites to the ICS-400 course. This training is hosted by Denton Fire and will be include other Emergency response professionals.

Course description: This training, designed by Interpretation Professionals for Denton County MRC, will help Interpreters identify expectations, goals and ethical considerations. This training will include information appropriate for both language translation and ASL interpretation. This training concludes the series of job-specific trainings offered for MRC members.

Course description: This course is for MRC members with in a non-medical role. American Heart Association's Heartsaver® CPR AED is an instructor-led course that teaches adult, child, and infant CPR and AED use, as well as how to relieve choking. There will be plenty of practice on mannequins, and after passing a simple test, you will be certified in CPR and AED use.

Psychological First Aid

Target Audience: All MRC members

Course description: This interactive, face to face training provides mental health and non-mental health professionals with the concepts and skills associated with Psychological First Aid. Utilizing the RAPID model (Reflective Listening, Assessment of Needs, Prioritization, Intervention, and Disposition), this specialized training provides perspectives on injuries and trauma that are beyond those physical in nature. Additionally, the RAPID model is readily applicable to public health settings, the workplace, the military, faith-based organizations, mass disaster venues, and even the demands of more well circumscribed critical incidents, e.g., dealing with the psychological aftermath of accidents, robberies, suicide, homicide, or community violence.

Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS)

Target Audience: All MRC members. Priority registration will be given to MRC members with a Medical or Command Team Assignment who were unable to attend BDLS in 2012.

Cultural Competency in a Health Emergency

Target Audience: This course is one that everyone should take at some point, and is open to all MRC members.

Course description:
What makes you unique? Why do you eat the foods you eat, wear your hair the way you do, or talk with an accent? Your culture helps to shape and define who you are. Denton County is home to a variety of people from different backgrounds and cultures. This interactive training will allow you to examine different worldviews, and will teach you how to better communicate with, interact with, and feel more comfortable around people from different cultures. The skills learned during this course can be used in shelters, POD setups, as well as in your everyday interactions.

Target Audience: This course is open to all MRC members, but those serving as Greeters, Interpreters, and in Command roles will have priority.
