Welcome to the Denton County Health Department website. Our staff has worked diligently with our community to improve the health outcomes of Denton County residents in an effort to make Denton County a healthier place to live, work and play. We provide preventive public health services by:
  • Assuring disease surveillance and working to prevent the spread of disease
  • Protecting against environmental hazards
  • Promoting and encouraging healthy behaviors
  • Preparing and responding to disasters and assisting communities in recovery efforts

Our department investigates and reports communicable diseases such as H1N1, measles, pertussis, hepatitis and over 70 other reportable diseases. The DCHD has developed a program called HEART-Health Emergency Alert Response Team. HEART is involved in emergency preparedness and response for major public health threats such as an anthrax attacks as well as responding to natural disasters such as tornados, floods or hurricanes that occur on the Texas or Louisiana coast.  DCHD also strives to educate the public regarding healthy behaviors in cardiovascular disease prevention, tobacco cessation and prevention, cancer risk reduction, diabetes education, and injury prevention.

In addition to these large-scale concerns, the DCHD provides services to include testing and treatment for persons with preventable communicable diseases such as sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and tuberculosis (TB). Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Services are available to provide nutrition education and food vouchers for those who qualify.

Our highly skilled, educated, and compassionate staff consists of bilingual support personnel, registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, physicians, certified health educators, social workers, nutritionists, and administrators. We partner with many other organizations such as schools districts, city parks and recreation departments, TWU, UNT, and EMS, just to name a few to provide a healthy social and physical environment. Recent DCHD efforts to improve public health have received state and national recognition:

  • 2008 - Heart and Stroke Healthy City Recognition Program, Honorable Mention for the City of Denton
  • 2009 - Texas Cardiovascular Health Promotion Award
  • 2009 - Outstanding Citizen Corp Council Award Serving a Population Under 1.5 Million
  • 2010 - Texas Cardiovascular Health Promotion Award, Outstanding Community Program
  • 2011 - Heart and Stroke Healthy City Recognition Program, Silver Award for the City of Denton
  • 2012 - Texas Cardiovascular Health Promotion Award, Outstanding Community Program

We will strive to continue to provide the best preventive and clinical services for our Denton County residents. Please feel free to contact me with your public health inquiries. Thank you for allowing us to serve you.
